Cleaning Method of Iron Scale on Surface of Stainless Steel Slab

The oxide film on the surface of stainless steel billet is thin and dense, and it is not easy to fall off. Usually, stainless steel billet will produce 0.2-0.3 mm oxide scale in the heating furnace. The defects of the billet in this range can be removed with iron oxide scale. If the defects are not in this range, the surface defects on the billet will be brought in if they are not treated. Final product. The surface defects of stainless steel billets can not be cleaned by flame. Flame cleaning will cause changes in composition and crystalline phase composition in the cleaning area of billets, which will affect the corrosion resistance of stainless steel products. Therefore, mechanical cleaning is a common and effective method for surface treatment of stainless steel. The general ways are iron oxide scale cleaner treatment, water explosion, shot blasting machine cleaning.
1. Disposal of Scale Cleaner
The iron oxide scale cleaner is mainly composed of steel brush rollers, driving device, high pressure water system, cooling water system and clamping device. Two rollers with steel wire (called steel brush rollers) are mounted on the roller base. The steel brush rollers rotate at high speed along the opposite direction of slab operation. The oxide sheet adhering to the slab surface is removed by scouring the slab surface with steel wire.
Iron oxide scale cleaner is suitable for many kinds of steel, but it is not thorough enough to clean iron oxide scale.
2. Water Explosion Pool
Water explosion tank is a kind of cooling medium with circulating water at room temperature. The high temperature slab is put into the tank and the oxide scale on the slab surface is removed by water explosion. The principle is that water vaporizes instantaneously when it meets high temperature billet and "water explosion" occurs, which produces a large amount of high-pressure steam. The impact force of steam acts on the surface of billet and causes the scales of iron oxide to peel off. At the same time, the shrinkage stress of the slab and the oxide scale on the slab surface is caused by the rapid cooling of water at high temperature. Because of the different stress between the slab and the oxide scale on the slab surface, the oxide scale breaks off and falls off.
Water blasting pool has low investment, less maintenance and low production and operation cost. However, it is less suitable for steel grades, only for some austenitic stainless steels, such as 301, 304, etc.
3. Shot Blasting Machine Cleaning
Shot blasting machine is often used to clean iron oxide scale on the surface of slab. The shot blasting machine is mainly composed of shot blasting chamber, shot blasting head, shot blasting conveying system, shot material cleaning device, shot material supplementer, dust removal system, lubrication system and electrical control system. Its working principle is to use the high-speed steel shot thrown out by the shot blaster to impact the iron oxide scale on the surface of the billet and make it fall off.
The operation rate of shot blasting machine is high and the cleaning speed can reach 3 m/min. Suitable for many kinds of steel. The removal effect of iron oxide scale is better. However, shot blasting machine can not handle high temperature slab, generally requires that the slab temperature is below 80 degrees. Therefore, the use of shot blasting machine to clean iron oxide scale of slab can not work online, and the slab needs to be cooled to below 80 degrees before shot blasting operation.
