Types of Stainless Steel Processing
Stainless steel surface processing is usually divided into two categories: one is the surface obtained by stainless steel mills using different production processes, commonly known as rolling surface processing; the other is to change the surface grade or properties, the surface processing of rolled steel, generally known as deep processing of stainless steel surface.
Rolling Surface Processing
Stainless steel plate and strip produced by rolling mill usually go through hot rolling, cold rolling, annealing and pickling, finishing and other processes. Because the surface of stainless steel cold-rolled strip occupies a special position in use, the surface processing of stainless steel cold-rolled strip can be divided into different surface processing types (or grades) according to different process methods, especially cold-rolled steel sheet and strip, which have various surface processing types and corresponding standards in different countries. Regulations, such as 2B, No. 1 and BA, as we often say, belong to this category.
Deep Machining of Stainless Steel Surface
For some special purposes, the surface properties of stainless steel must be changed, and the surface of stainless steel may be further processed by different processes.
(1) Electroplating and evaporation are used to coat stainless steel surface with a layer of wear-resistant or abrasion-resistant and corrosion-resistant coating to improve the surface properties of stainless steel. In order to make the coating firmly bond with the metal matrix, different methods can be used to pretreat the surface to remove oil and rust. The advantage of electroplating is that it has little effect on the microstructures of the matrix materials, such as chromium and nickel plating. It is mainly used for artwork and decoration.
(2) Electrolytic polishing is the opposite of electroplating. It does not deposit chromium or nickel on the substrate, but uses stainless steel as the anode and electrolyte with special formula to etch the thin layer of 2-40PM thick on the surface of stainless steel, thus obtaining a smooth, clean and bright body with excellent corrosion resistance.
(3) Coloring surface is to immerse stainless steel in hot chromic acid or sulfuric acid solution and then harden the stainless steel cathode in another acid solution. The base metal reacts with thermal acid to form a transparent film, which is basically colorless, but shows color under the interference of light. After polishing and coloring, the metal gloss is very high. This stainless steel not only has better corrosion resistance and does not fade, but also can be processed by bending or light stretching.
(4) Reprocessing (pre-coating) after surface painting is mainly used for roof building materials. After processing, it is mainly used for building materials outside the building. Carbon fluoride resin and silicon polyester are applied on the surface of stainless steel to increase the corrosion resistance in the marine environment and make the roof durable, pollution resistant and dazzling.
